With the Sedanpocalypse upon us, let us begin a deadpool. Which cars will go first? Regardless of how good they are, they’re doomed.

You have your obvious victims, the relatively expensive to make, low-volume relics like the Taurus, Impala, and LaCrosse.

But what about the perennial favorites? I’m talking about the beloved but commercially ignored Mazda6? That car has leprosy for the majority of car buyers.

So, who’ll it be, and when?

Just think, 20 years from now, young men will pine for green sedans the way they currently get misty over brown wagons...

Obviously the Accord will never leave us since it’s the template from which all sports coupe designs are derived from.

I wish I could say the Cruze but due to the price I doubt it. You also said the two most obvious. I would say the Chrysler 300 but I predict that will keep going just because it's Chrysler. I'm going to go out on a limb here, I think the Corrola will die.

Buick Verano, 2016.

Cadillac XTS, 2017.

Dodge Dart, 2017.

Chrysler 200, 2017.

Ford Taurus, 2017.

Hyundai Azera, 2017.

Lexus ES, 2018. *gasp*

Subaru Legacy, 2019.

That’s a good list.

I was also thinking the Legacy isn’t gonna stick around too long in Sedan version. We already saw the Impreza go and come back sort of... maybe? But for how long?

Also, I think the Taurus will go for some time, but it will be brought back at some point in the future again.

As scary as it is for me, I say the Mazda6 may not be long for this world if it keeps selling poorly. Such a shame. I love mine.

The first 2 years of new CX9 sales might determine a WHOLE lot for the 6. The CX5 effectively killed the 2, after all.

Funnily enough, according to one of the local dealers at least, Austin is the #1 market for both the 6 and 3. I do see both all day long.

I hope they’ll put that 2.5 Turbo in the 6. That may help some sales. But it’s always going to be a niche player no matter what. The Camry, Accord and Fusion just have a grip on the already dwindling market and they won’t let go.

When was the last time you saw someone buy an Altima?

The Mazda 6 is a global platform that’s already homologated for the North American market, so it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere soon.

The Chrysler 200, Dodge Dart, and Buick Verano are already on the chopping block.

The Buick Regal will most likely follow.

Acura doesn’t really have a reason to sell the ILX anymore.

The Versa Sedan may be replaced with the cheaper Micra ($7831.39 US base at time of conversion).

The Fiesta and Focus sedans may very well die off for the next generation.

The Toyota Yaris iA (formerly Scion iA) is no longer profitable.

The Sonic sedan will be a fleet special.

Does anyone buy CLA250s anymore?

The XTS is pretty much dead in the water.

The only ones that will survive are the big and the strong. Let’s not mourn the death of the small sedan, as that would mean someone would be missing it. They are a packaging nightmare, typically have poor headroom compared to a hatch, and are pretty much a North American oddity. I say the more hatchbacks, the better.

Lancer, 6, 3, Avalon, Jetta, Passat, LaCrosse, TLX, RLX, ILX, and Regal are all on borrowed time. The obituaries for the 200, Dart, Verano, and Taurus have already been written, and I could see Nissan eventually consolidating the Maxima and Altima lines into a single model. The Impala is actually selling relatively well, for the segment, GM might be justified in doing one more generation - especially after Buick becomes an all-crossover brand.

I could see Buick, Acura, and Mitsubishi switching to all light truck lineups.

Yeah, I don’t think most people don’t buy the 6 because it’s underpowered. I think it’s because they either forgot or simply don’t know it exists. My mom asked if a new 6 was an Infiniti, and if you’re confusing a Mazda for an Infiniti, you’r REALLY anonymous in the market.

I want one, regardless. But I’ll probably get a GTI.

I think at some point people will forget about it because Toyota changes things too slowly with it. When I sat in a new one it didn't even seem as modern as a Cruze or a Fusion.

That's because it's a winning formula, as it has been for 50 years now. Corolla is a household name now, it's here to stay.

The Crown Vic was a winning formula too. I say at some point once all of the obvious sedans are gone the Corolla in its current form will hit the chopping block. Then again Toyota isn't about all of this up to date jazz it seems.
